Chapter 322 - 332: After Eating, Create a 3-Person World
Lorne Vance, dressed in overalls and a white short-sleeved shirt, immediately trotted over the moment he saw them. He reached out his hands and said, "Sister, Brother-in-law."
Even though their families weren’t particularly close, Lorne Vance was very fond of Holly Winslow and always wanted her to hold him whenever he visited.
’It was probably their blood relation.’
Holly Winslow wasn’t as wary of him as she used to be; on the contrary, she was very good to him. She bent down, picked him up, and teased, "You’ve gotten heavier."
Lorne Vance gave her a peck on the cheek and explained in a bright, clear voice, "Because I’m bigger now. Daddy says when I’m bigger, I can protect people."
"Then I can protect you, Sister."
He glanced at Mortimer Quincy and whispered to Holly Winslow, "Sister, if Brother-in-law bullies you, you tell me. I’ll bite him."
Kids are adorable no matter what face they make. Holly Winslow burst out laughing. "Okay, the next time your brother-in-law bullies me, I’ll be sure to tell you."
"Did you hear that, Brother-in-law? If you bully me, Laura will bite you."
Mortimer Quincy nodded seriously. "Alright. Next time I bully your sister, I’ll let you bite me."
Lorne Vance got a little shy. He whispered, "Brother-in-law, if you don’t bully Sister, I won’t bite you. Really."
Holly Winslow couldn’t stop laughing. She reached out and pinched his cheek. "Laura, how can you be so cute?"
"I’m not cute. Big boys aren’t cute," Lorne Vance said with a straight face.
Holly Winslow laughed again. He was getting too heavy for her, so she passed him to Mortimer Quincy before turning to look at Vincent Vance and Yvonne Lewis.
Over the past few years, the two of them had aged some. They’d lost the spirited energy they once had. Holly had heard that Vincent Vance’s company hadn’t survived the financial crisis and had collapsed, so he’d moved back to his hometown to start over.
’They probably didn’t have a lot of money, but they were still better off than the average person.’
The change in Yvonne Lewis was actually the most obvious. She had always been meticulous about her appearance, but now there were three or four new wrinkles at the corners of her eyes. She must have had a lot on her mind.
She’d once heard from Lorne Vance that his parents had a fight and had almost gotten a divorce.
Holly Winslow never pried into these matters. Yvonne Lewis’s current situation was the result of her own choices.
She said politely, "Mom, Uncle Vance."
Mortimer Quincy greeted them as well.
Not seeing her grandmother, Holly Winslow asked, "Where’s Grandma?"
"Busy in the kitchen," Yvonne Lewis said, having just come out from helping.
Holly Winslow pursed her lips. ’The Lewis Family’s attitude is a perfect example of old-fashioned feudal thinking. A woman’s place is in the kitchen, 365 days a year.’ "I’ll go help Grandma."
"I’ll go with you." Mortimer Quincy handed Lorne Vance to Vincent Vance, and the two of them went into the kitchen.
Holly Winslow’s grandmother, Florence Sawyer, was stir-frying vegetables. Aidan Lewis’s wife was there too.
Aidan Lewis was a terrible person, but his wife was hardworking. ’If things go as they did in my past life,’ Holly thought, ’they’ll get divorced.’
’Aidan Lewis’s domestic abuse caused her to miscarry, and it was Mortimer Quincy who handled the subsequent lawsuit that finally got her the divorce.’
’That was also when Aidan Lewis started acting up, coming over to cause a scene every day. Ahem, Mortimer Quincy was no saint either. Relying on years of working out, he beat Aidan Lewis into submission.’
’Truly beat the fear into him.’
’That guy, Mortimer, was just worried Aidan Lewis would come looking for her.’
When Florence Sawyer saw them come in, she quickly shooed them out. "Holly, Miles, you two get out of here. The kitchen is dirty."
"It’s okay, Grandma." Holly Winslow glanced at the unwashed vegetables and was about to start washing them when Mortimer Quincy stopped her. "I’ll do it. You can snap the greens."
Holly Winslow’s eyes curved into crescents as she smiled. Looking at the sharp lines of his profile, she whispered, "Hubby, you’re so manly."
Mortimer Quincy chuckled as he washed the vegetables. When Holly Winslow saw him open his mouth to speak, she knew exactly what that guy was about to say. "Tone it down, or I’ll throw you in the creek outside to cool off."
After dinner, Holly Winslow had Florence Sawyer try on the clothes to see if they fit, promising to exchange them if they didn’t.
Florence Sawyer tried them on, and all the clothes fit perfectly. She took Holly Winslow’s hand and said earnestly, "Holly, you must have spent a lot of money again. Don’t buy me anything next time."
"They weren’t expensive, Grandma. Just enjoy them," Holly Winslow said with a smile.
"Holly, just buying clothes won’t do, will it? Your grandma is seventy today. You should at least give a proper gift."
Aidan’s mother said with a hint of sarcasm, then turned to Yvonne Lewis. "You came back this time and didn’t give Mom any money either. Everyone says you’re so rich, but you can’t even spare a few hundred?"
Yvonne Lewis stayed silent, as was her habit—a silent concession. Holly Winslow didn’t say anything either. The Lewis Family’s whole deal was that the more you engaged with them, the more worked up they got.
Mortimer Quincy stated flatly, "We don’t have any."
Aidan’s mother looked at his cold, stern face and was rendered speechless.
Holly Winslow had to suppress a smile. She discreetly squeezed Mortimer Quincy’s hand. ’Nice one, Hubby.’
She wasn’t afraid of offending The Lewis Family. Besides her grandmother, she didn’t care about any of them anyway.
Florence Sawyer quickly came to Holly Winslow and Yvonne Lewis’s defense. "Holly and Yvonne already bought so many things and spent a lot of money. It’s more than enough. Besides, just having you all back to celebrate my birthday is wonderful."
"Mom, you can’t put it that way," Aidan’s mother said, crossing her legs. "Back then, you spent so much money raising your daughter, and Holly spent her school breaks at our place, which also cost a lot. Now it’s their turn to repay you with money."
Holly Winslow glanced at the woman, wondering how she had the nerve to say such a thing. ’Take Yvonne Lewis, for example. She’s sent The Lewis Family a lot of money over the years, more than enough to repay them for raising her.’
’She glanced at her grandfather. He remained silent, clearly condoning his daughter-in-law’s demand for money.’
She couldn’t be bothered to argue with them anymore; she’d rather be at home grading a couple of papers. "Hubby, we have some things to take care of, so we should probably get going. Grandma, we’re heading out now. We’ll come see you again when we have time."
Although Florence Sawyer was sad to see them go, she couldn’t make them stay. "Alright, I’ll walk you to the edge of the village."
Just then, Holly Winslow’s grandfather spoke up. "Take your cousin with you on your way out."
Holly Winslow was against the idea, but before she could say anything, Mortimer Quincy spoke. "I’m a neat freak. I don’t like other people in my car."
With that, he led Holly Winslow away.
Once they were a good distance away, Holly Winslow wrapped her arms around his, a wide grin on her face. "Hubby, you were especially manly today. Hehe, I’m awarding you the Best Husband Award."
"Alright."
Mortimer Quincy bent down, turning his cheek to her and motioning for a kiss. Holly Winslow quickly gave him one, then said, "Hubby, give me a piggyback ride."
...
Since they had the day off, the two of them bought groceries and went over to Wyatt Winslow’s place. When he still wasn’t back by six-thirty, Holly Winslow gave him a call. "Dad, are you still at work?"
Robin Roland’s voice seemed to come from the other end of the line. "Is that Holly? Tell them to come over and eat with us."
Holly Winslow asked, "Dad, are you at Aunt Roland’s?"
After graduating, Yara Nolan had started working at Holly Winslow’s factory, and was already making seven or eight thousand a month.
To be closer to him, Robin Roland had moved to the area. This year, the mother and son had just managed to make a down payment on a three-bedroom, one-living-room apartment in the county seat.
As for why Wyatt Winslow and Robin Roland had grown so close, it was likely because they were developing feelings for each other.
They knew it, Yara Nolan knew it, and everyone else knew it. It was an unspoken understanding that they all tacitly accepted.
Wyatt Winslow grunted his affirmation. "Want to come over for dinner?"
"We can’t, I’ve already made a ton of food here. Dad, you eat well, and please say hi to Aunt Roland for me."
Holly Winslow hung up and looked at the table laden with food. "Hubby, you call Zeke Zane, and I’ll call Ellie. Let’s ask them to come eat with us."
Mortimer Quincy shook his head and said simply, "Let’s not. We can have a night to ourselves."
He paused for a moment. "And after we eat, we can work on making it a world for three."
