Chapter 1110 Considering Future Choices!
Chapter 1110 Considering Future Choices!
"This is simply asking the impossible..." he muttered to himself, his gaze shifting to the second option, "Random anchoring..."
This means he will be like someone blindly casting a fishing line into a boundless, dark ocean, with no way of knowing what kind of sea or world the other end of the line will connect to. It could be a resource-rich, civilized paradise, or it could be a hell with bizarre rules and monsters, or even a desolate wasteland of death.
A deep chill crept up Gao Yao's spine. He suddenly remembered a terrifying conjecture about the cosmic forest that he had once glimpsed in a tattered ancient book—the so-called Dark Forest Theory.
Every civilization is an armed hunter, lurking in eternal darkness and silence. Once it discovers traces of other life, the best option is to preemptively fire and eliminate it before it reveals its threat or coordinates.
Now, he is about to personally open a stable passage connecting two worlds. This is akin to lighting a campfire and shouting at the top of his lungs in a completely unknown, dark forest governed by the cruelest jungle law!
If he were to travel alone, he would bear the risks himself. With his strength and temperament, he would dare to venture into even the most dangerous places, and if he couldn't win, he would still have the possibility of maneuvering or even escaping. But once it becomes a stable "passage," the danger becomes two-way. His world, his wife and children, and his legacy that he is determined to protect, will be directly exposed to the gaze of the unknown dimension.
"What if... the opposite side is an aggressive civilization with technology or magic far surpassing this world's?" Horrifying images uncontrollably surfaced in Gao Yao's mind: colossal steel warships blotting out the sky crossing the passage, unleashing destructive beams of light; or an undead legion surging in like a tide, devouring all living beings in sight; or some invisible, intangible spiritual pollution, quietly spreading along the passage, eroding the minds of all intelligent beings...
His imperial cavalry may be able to sweep away all enemies in the world, but how much chance does it have against a completely unknown system and an unimaginable attack? How will his family and subjects resist?
The excitement and relief receded like the tide, leaving behind a beach of anxiety strewn with sharp reefs. Gao Yao paced slowly through the spacious and magnificent study, his hands behind his back. His heavy footsteps echoed clearly on the smooth, mirror-like obsidian floor, each step feeling as if he were standing on the scales of his heart.
On one side of the scale lies the eternal allure of exploring infinite possibilities and pursuing the mysteries of transcendence, as well as the fortunate chance of preserving all that is precious in this world.
On the other side of the scales lay placing the safety of the entire world in a completely uncontrollable gamble. Throughout his life, Gao Yao's actions, though often fraught with peril, were always carefully planned and executed, keeping risks within acceptable limits.
This time, however, the absolute lack of information rendered any plan a castle in the air.
It has been three months since the mission was completed.
Ever since the day the system interface revealed the astonishing truth about the "dimensional portal," Gao Yao has been caught in an unprecedented struggle. He is no longer the timid cook by Yi Xiaochuan's side, content with just enough to eat and wear, nor the courtier who later struggled in the vortex of power, his every step stained with blood. He is Gao Yao, the founding emperor who ended a century of war, unified the various kingdoms, and established the "Great Xia," the "Heavenly Martial Emperor," a martial arts master whose power overwhelms the world. His every thought and action affects countless lives and maintains the hard-won peace.
That's why this choice is so difficult.
On his desk lay a mountain of memorials he hadn't reviewed for days. In their place were sketches filled with intricate lines and markings, and dense notes detailing various deductions, advantages and disadvantages, and risk assessments. Under the lamplight, his face seemed a little thinner than it had been three months ago, but his eyes were even more profound and sharp, as if two eerie flames were burning deep within his pupils.
"Once the passage is firmly opened, it will be like the gates of the country being opened."
He walked slowly to the railing, his hand resting on the cool white jade pillar, his gaze fixed on the northeast. There, deep within the palace, a warm light always shone for him.
He thought again of his old comrades who had followed him through mountains of corpses and seas of blood, and of the faces of the common people who were finally able to live in peace and prosperity under his rule. This land had endured too much war and could no longer withstand the unknown, and perhaps even more terrible, devastation.
"If it were just for me alone..." Gao Yao clenched his fist, his knuckles cracking slightly. With his current cultivation and temperament, he dared to venture into mountains of knives and seas of fire, or demon's lair, alone. If he couldn't win, he would always have room to maneuver or escape. He would bear the risks himself, and have no regrets about life or death.
But the system provides a bridge, not a "door".
This means he must be responsible for the safety of the entire world. What lies beyond the passage? Is it a sacred cultivation ground brimming with spiritual energy, or a technologically advanced, heavily armed interstellar civilization? Is it a gentle, terrestrial world, or a terrifying realm with extreme environments and bizarre creatures? Or perhaps… a killing field that follows the cruel "Dark Forest Law," harboring the most primal malice towards all outsiders?
The unknown is the greatest fear, especially for a ruler who bears the weight of the world on his shoulders.
Countless times he wanted to give up, convincing himself that in this world, he had already reached the pinnacle, possessing everything he desired: imperial power, strength, family, honor… why risk disrupting this hard-won balance? Wouldn't it be better to peacefully remain the greatest emperor of all time, protecting his descendants?
However, whenever this thought arose in his mind, a stronger sense of resentment and turmoil would surge within him. It was a yearning from the depths of his soul, a pursuit of the mysteries behind the "system," and a longing for the answer to the ultimate question: "Is there a world beyond this world?"
At the same time, he could not deny that deep down, he always harbored a complex and unspeakable longing for his "home" planet, Blue Star, even though that world had given him mostly bitterness. More importantly, as the one who reached the summit, he understood the principle of "if you don't advance, you fall behind" better than anyone else.
The resources and martial arts limits of this world seem to be within reach. Without new variables, the Great Xia's prosperity might last a century, but it will inevitably fall into the cycle of history. The Path might be that biggest variable, the possibility of breaking free from conventions and truly achieving immortality.
This greed for "possibilities" and his prudence regarding "responsibility" clashed fiercely within him, day and night.
Finally, on a moonlit night with few stars, as Gao Yao gazed once more at the vast and boundless starry sky, he made his decision.
"I will open this door!" His voice was not loud, but it was resolute and carried far in the night wind.
