He closed his eyes, trying to recall the tone and manner of those Hydra officers giving orders that he had heard before. That haughty, unquestionable arrogance.
He imitated the accent of the Hydra squad leader he had killed.
He cleared his throat and then pressed the call button.
A short, but authoritative rebuke in German came from his mouth. He deliberately lowered his voice to make it sound more steady and aged.
In an instant, the entire noisy communication channel truly fell silent.
Everyone was stunned by the sudden, unfamiliar voice.
Chu Hang's heart was in his throat; he knew the most crucial moment had arrived.
“This is ‘Observer’,” he continued, using a fabricated, imposing-sounding codename. “I’ve just received Lord Schmidt’s top order. Allied main force has been spotted on the southern front, in area A7. They’re attempting to flank us. Order: all fourth, fifth, and sixth squads responsible for the eastern encirclement, immediately abandon your current positions and assemble at full speed in area A7 on the southern front to construct a new defensive line! Repeat, this is a top order and must be executed within ten minutes!”
After he finished speaking, he immediately released the call button.
The entire channel fell into a deathly silence.
Chu Hang could even hear his own and Gabe's heartbeats pounding like drums.
Will they believe it?
Time passed, second by second.
Just as Chu Hang was about to lose his temper and shout again, a young officer's voice, filled with obvious doubt, rang out on the channel.
"...Received, 'Observer'. But once we withdraw, a huge gap will appear in the encirclement on the east side, and that American..."
"Idiot!" Chu Hang interrupted him before he could finish, pressing the call button again and roaring in a furious, exasperated tone, "Are you questioning Lord Schmidt's decision? Is one American soldier more important than the flank security of our entire base? I don't care what methods you use, execute the order! If the southern front falls, I'll personally twist your head off and use it as a football!"
The roar, laced with threat and anger, clearly had an effect.
The young officer dared not question it again.
"Yes, yes! As you command! We will carry it out immediately!"
Soon, the sounds of troops assembling and vehicles starting up came through the channel.
Chu Hang and Gabu exchanged a glance, and in each other's eyes they saw a hint of ecstatic joy at surviving a disaster!
They actually mobilized Hydra's forces using a fake order!
However, their joy didn't even last three seconds.
A cold, emotionless voice, yet filled with boundless killing intent, suddenly rang out on the communication channel.
Chu Hang and Gabu will never forget that voice.
It is a "hunting dog".
"What a wonderful performance, my little mouse."
"Not only can you dig holes, but you can even imitate your master's voice to bark."
The voice paused, as if enjoying the fear that Chu Hang and Gabu were experiencing, and then, in an almost cruel, deliberate tone, slowly spoke.
"However, it seems you've forgotten something."
"I'm in charge of reconnaissance on the southern front."
"There is nothing there except wind and snow."
"Now I know where you are."
"The game is over."
Chapter 17 Dead End and Opportunity
"The game is over."
The emotionless voice came off the communicator.
Chu Hang felt as if his blood had frozen.
Only those two words remained in his and Gabe's minds.
The cold seeped into my body from all directions, no longer penetrating, but eroding. With each breath, it felt as if ice shards were scraping through my lungs.
Gabe's situation is even worse.
His blood-drained black face had turned ashen, and his lips were purple. His body had stopped trembling, and even the convulsions had ceased. He stood like a frozen sculpture, with only a barely perceptible rise and fall in his chest.
“We…we’re doomed…” Gabe’s lips barely moved, the voice squeezed out from his throat, trembling with sobs, “He knows we’re here…he’ll come…”
He couldn't continue speaking; the last glimmer of light in his eyes went out, and he slumped down, as if waiting to die.
Chu Hang's heart sank as well.
He couldn't help but curse inwardly.
No matter how much they planned, they didn't anticipate that the "hound" was actually in charge of reconnaissance on the southern front. That's just Murphy's Law. A seemingly flawless deception turned out to be a trap they'd fallen right into.
A battlefield deception that could be written into textbooks was instantly exposed by a single coincidence.
Now, that sadistic psychopath who revels in torture is slowly making his way down from downstream. He and Gabe are like the turkey on the Thanksgiving table, waiting for the hunter to decide where to strike.
Are we just going to die so pathetically, in the cold and fear?
These two words do not exist in Chu Hang's dictionary.
Just as despair was about to engulf him, a sudden realization struck him.
No! Things haven't gotten to the worst yet!
The "hound" was clever, but he made a fatal mistake—he was too arrogant. He thought that by exposing the deception, he had everything under control, and he couldn't help but declare his victory on the public channel, basking in the fear of his prey.
But he forgot that information transmission is delayed on the battlefield. His words caused immense chaos for others!
"Gabe! Listen to me!" Chu Hang suddenly grabbed Gabe's shoulders and shook him violently. "Look at me! This isn't over yet! We still have a chance!"
"Opportunity?" Gabe's unfocused eyes strained to focus. "What opportunity? The opportunity to see what kind of knife he's using?"
"No!" Chu Hang's eyes flashed with a mad glint. He leaned close to Gabu's ear and spoke rapidly, "That bastard, he used the public channel! Everyone heard it! The fourth, fifth, and sixth squads who just received my fake orders, they heard it too!"
Gabe was stunned.
Chu Hang ignored him and continued his analysis: "A Hydra squad leader is about to head south to provide reinforcements. Suddenly, another guy codenamed 'Hound' says on the channel that the order is fake. What will he think? What will he do?"
Gabe instinctively replied, "I...I'll stop...I'll be stunned..."
"That's right! It's chaos!" Chu Hang's voice rose. "They'll have doubts, they'll hesitate, they'll call command to confirm! Before that, they're just a bunch of headless flies! This is the opportunity we risked our lives for!"
"More importantly!" Chu Hang's gaze fell on the distant mountain ridge. "Captain America! Steve Rogers! He doesn't care if Hydra's command is in disarray! What will he do if he sees the encirclement on the east side weakening?"
“He’ll rush out!” This time, Gabe answered without hesitation.
"Yes!" Chu Hang's lips curled into a ferocious smile. "He will fight to his last breath and charge towards this only gap!"
"So, the current situation is that 'Hounds' are coming down from downstream to kill us. Captain America, leading Hydra's pursuers, is frantically racing towards us from upstream!"
"We are right at the very center where these two torrents are about to converge!"
Gabe was stunned by the sight.
"Then...isn't that even more dangerous?"
"Danger? No, this is called putting yourself in a do-or-die situation!" Chu Hang yanked him up from the ground and roared, "What we need to do now is not escape! We need to gamble! Gamble that Captain America will get here before that freak! As long as he arrives with his pursuers first, this place will become a new, chaotic battlefield! We can then take advantage of the chaos and disappear completely!"
After saying that, Chu Hang helped Gabu up, dragged his injured leg, and rushed towards a shallow ditch filled with rocks and withered bushes.
"Hide behind this rock! No matter what you hear or see, don't move! Unless I call you!"
After settling Gabu in, Chu Hang took a deep breath and took out C4 plastic explosives from his backpack.
His fingers were a little stiff from the cold, but his movements were steady. He placed the explosives on the edge of the reeds where they had just hidden, on a path that would inevitably be taken by those coming from downstream.
Then, he took a shoelace, found a dry twig, and made a makeshift tripwire. One end of the thin rope was tied to the fuse pull ring, and the other end was gently draped between two bushes.
He knew this thing wouldn't kill the "hound," but all he wanted was a signal.
A single sound can signal Captain America, "Hey, run this way, there's a surprise."
After doing all this, he rolled back to Gabe's side, and the two of them pressed themselves against the cold rock wall like stones, slowing their breathing.
Time passed by second by second.
The sound of wind, snow, distant gunfire, and a heart pounding like a drum.
Chu Hang's gaze was fixed on two directions.
Downstream, there is death (the hound).
The western ridge represents hope (Captain America).
Hurry up, Steve! If you don't hurry, I'm going to be turned into a specimen! Chu Hang roared in his heart.
A burst of gunfire and explosions suddenly came from the western ridge! The sound was like a flood bursting its banks, sweeping towards the riverbank!
Chu Hang and Gabu exchanged a glance, both seeing the ecstasy in each other's eyes.
Captain America charged out! He made the right bet!
However, at the same time.
Downstream, on that desolate riverbank, in the shadow of the reeds where they had set their traps, a tall figure appeared silently.
He walked slowly, even leisurely.
His long black trench coat remained motionless in the cold wind. His gaze, like a laser beam, locked directly onto the reed bed.
It is a "hunting dog".
He arrived faster than expected.
Chu Hang's heart sank.
On one side, there is the hope of desperately breaking through the encirclement.
On the other side, death is silently descending.
Chu Hang and Gabu were caught in the middle.
