Chapter 14 Hot-blooded Fool, Shadowy King
Chapter 14 Hot-blooded Fool, Shadowy King
Dozens of students turned around at the same second, their movements perfectly synchronized.
The rusty cervical vertebrae made a cracking sound.
Lu Dan's flashlight beam trembled slightly, purely out of physiological instinct.
The thing behind us didn't pounce, which means that as long as the rules of dialogue and directions are not violated, these things are temporarily in a neutral and hostile state, similar to camera surveillance.
Without glancing to the side, he steeled himself and walked up to the stairwell.
Just as I stepped onto the two steps, an unexpected event occurred: the motion-activated light above my head, which had been flickering on and off, went out.
A gust of wind, carrying the smell of rust, rushed straight towards Lu Dan's face in the darkness.
Lu Dan's pupils contracted sharply. Just as he pulled out the unreliable rubber stick, a dark figure flipped down the stair railing and kicked Lu Dan from behind.
"Bang!"
A muffled thud.
"Thank goodness, uncle, you almost got ambushed by that gossipy woman."
A clear, energetic voice rang out in the gloomy stairwell.
Lu Dan narrowed his eyes. There was a boy standing in the hallway.
He was wearing the same blue and white school uniform as those monsters outside, except that the uniform was so dirty it looked like it had just been pulled out of a garbage dump, covered with black grease and dark red stains.
He was carrying a dismantled table leg, with several rusty nails still stuck to the top of the leg, making him look quite ferocious.
But this is not the point.
The key point is that although this kid's face was a bit dirty, his features were regular, his eyes were as clear as a spring, and he had the kind of arrogant smile that a hot-blooded male protagonist has on his lips.
In this school building filled with faceless monsters and the stench of decay, such a smile is rarer than a ghost.
"Uncle, you're not bad. You didn't make a sound even in that situation." The boy casually leaned the nailed table leg on his shoulder, revealing a set of white teeth. "I'm Zhang Kai from Class 2 of Senior Three. I'm the only remaining 'Three Good Student' in this school."
"Uncle, are you the new security guard? This job is tough. The last security guard had his leg torn off and used as a toothpick."
Lu Dan didn't speak, but silently gripped the rubber baton even tighter.
This is a typical male lead setup for a horror movie: naturally brave, physically gifted, and with an excessive sense of justice, he is usually responsible for saving screaming female characters in the early stages, causing the death of his teammates due to recklessness in the middle stages, and finally turning the tables in a desperate situation.
Simply put, he's a ticking time bomb who doesn't know what's going on.
"Why aren't you saying anything? Are you scared stiff?" Zhang Kai took a step closer and looked Lu Dan up and down with curiosity.
"Don't worry, sir, as long as I'm here, these 'senior students' won't hurt you! I'm the kind of guy who's going to find out what's going on at this lousy school!"
Lu Dan remained silent, then pointed to the rooftop upstairs.
Security Rule 3: If a lost student asks for directions, do not answer; simply point towards the rooftop.
He still couldn't confirm whether Zhang Kai in front of him was a real player or a high-level NPC in disguise.
On this film set, caution is the first rule for survival.
"The rooftop?" Zhang Kai paused for a moment, then his eyes lit up, as if he had grasped some earth-shattering secret. "Uncle, you mean the clue is on the rooftop? Brilliant! How come I didn't think of that? It's the best view in the whole school! Thanks, uncle, you're a true friend!"
After saying that, this hot-blooded idiot ignored Lu Dan's reaction, grabbed a table leg, and rushed upstairs, shouting as he ran, "Uncle, you just hide on the second floor and wait for my triumphant return!"
Watching Zhang Kai's figure disappear into the darkness, Lu Dan couldn't help but think to himself: With this level of comprehension, if he survives tonight, it would be the greatest insult to the horror movie genre.
However, with such a tank drawing fire and clearing the way in front, his patrol mission became much easier.
Lu Dan glanced at his somewhat restless shadow and muttered to himself, "Looks like I'm not the only living person in this school."
......
......
Lin Xiaoxiao sat in the cozy counseling room. She had just drawn the curtains, keeping the "monster security guard" with the huge black shadow out of her sight.
The air conditioner vents blew out warm air with a lavender scent, and the quartz clock on the wall ticked regularly. Everything here was too perfect, as perfect as a newly built show flat.
"Thump, thump, thump."
Three very soft knocks sounded on the door.
Lin Xiaoxiao quickly adjusted her posture, put on a professional, gentle fake smile, and quietly reached into the drawer under her desk to grasp the utility knife.
"Please come in."
The door opened a crack, and a head peeked in furtively.
The newcomer was a middle-aged man wearing gray overalls, carrying a heavy toolbox. His name tag read "Logistics Department, Bao Ping".
He has an ordinary face that's easy to forget, but his small, darting eyes, like a mouse's, betray his restlessness.
"Teacher Lin, right?"
Bao Ping didn't come in completely. Instead, he stood in the doorway and first scanned Lin Xiaoxiao from head to toe with the same scrutinizing gaze one would give a criminal. After confirming that there was no danger, he squeezed into the room and locked the door behind him.
"Um, I'm here to fix the light. The head of student affairs said the light in this room is flickering badly and might affect your tutoring sessions with the students."
As Bao Ping spoke, he casually pointed to the ceiling light above his head, which was as bright as a small sun, but his eyes were fixed on the staff handbook on Lin Xiaoxiao's desk.
Lin Xiaoxiao maintained her smile: "Master Bao, this light is fine, it hasn't flickered at all."
"Oh dear, these are all potential hazards, don't you understand? It'll be too late once things get bad."
Bao Ping completely ignored Lin Xiaoxiao's questions. He didn't even set up a ladder. Instead, he squatted down in front of the socket next to the desk, pretending to take out a test pen and poking around. He mumbled in a low voice, as if talking to himself, or as if he was deliberately saying it to Lin Xiaoxiao.
"This school is really weird. I just saw a few students over there laughing like idiots in the middle of the night, like they were possessed. Professor Lin, you're a psychology student, do you think this could be considered mass hysteria?"
"Students face a lot of academic pressure, so it's normal for them to exhibit some strange behavior occasionally." Lin Xiaoxiao's heart stirred; she found this person rather interesting.
Wanting to test the waters, she gave an answer befitting a brainwashed teacher while observing the other person's reaction.
Sure enough, upon hearing this, Bao Ping's face revealed an undisguised look of disdain and disappointment. He curled his lip and muttered under his breath, "Tch, another brainwashed idiot."
Although the sound was soft, it was exceptionally clear in the quiet office.
Lin Xiaoxiao raised an eyebrow, not angry at all, but rather feeling that there was something to this situation.
This guy is definitely an undercover agent, or the kind of reporter who wants to make a big story. His little schemes are written all over his face. Although he's a bit sleazy, he's absolutely an excellent source of intelligence.
"However," Lin Xiaoxiao changed the subject, adding a meaningful tone, "sometimes when the pressure is too great, it can indeed make people see things they shouldn't see."
"For example, I also feel that the walls of this school are too thick, as if there are some unheard sounds hidden inside."
Bao Ping, who was about to get up, suddenly froze. He slowly turned his head, his small eyes gleaming, and re-examined the seemingly weak female teacher.
"Teacher Lin," Bao Ping pulled a crumpled piece of newspaper from a compartment in his toolbox, "there's something more to your words."
Just as the two were testing each other and the atmosphere grew increasingly tense, a buzzing sound suddenly came from the loudspeaker, "Buzz—buzz—".
Immediately afterwards, a sweet female voice rang out throughout the campus: "Dear teachers and students, it's time for the late-night broadcast."
Tonight we're having a special bonfire party on the rooftop of Building A to celebrate...catching that scumbag trying to disrupt the campus harmony!
Lin Xiaoxiao's expression changed, and she drew back the curtains to look out the window.
Meanwhile, in the stairwell on the other side, Lu Dan, who was about to slack off, also stopped in his tracks.
The announcement he heard was: "The lost security guard is requested to go to the rooftop to patrol as soon as possible; your campfire is ready."
