Chapter 19 Saints and Immortals
Chapter 19 Saints and Immortals
Lorne's experience taught him that when a teacher poses a question before class, it is often not in the students' expectation of an answer, but rather simply to introduce the next topic.
So he didn't stand out; he just looked ahead with a well-behaved expression and a thirst for knowledge.
Perhaps Lorne's gaze was too intense, or perhaps it was because Tormon behind him was simply too big to ignore, but Professor Melanne couldn't help but glance in their direction.
Turning her gaze away, she asked another question:
"I have another question: what is an element?"
This time, someone raised their hand: "Earth, Fire, Feng Shui?"
"Those are the four pillar elements."
Professor Meligne nodded: "But there are more elements than just these. Lightning, wood, light, darkness... and many more subtle ones."
She paused for a moment: "Have you ever thought about this question: what exactly are elements?"
The audience fell silent, many lost in thought.
"An element is the smallest unit that makes up everything."
"The stone seats beneath your feet are a polymer of earth element. The air you breathe is a flow of wind element, the blood in your bodies is a variant of water element, and your bones are a sediment of earth element. Even the signals in your minds right now as you think are the faint glow of lightning element."
"The world is a vast ocean of elements, and all things, every blade of grass, every tree, every living species, are but a speck of dust in this ocean of elements."
There was a slight commotion in the crowd.
Professor Mérené continued:
"Since everything is made up of elements, then here's the question: the air around you is full of elements, the earth is full of elements, and even your bodies are full of elements. Why can't you control them at will? Why can't ordinary people make stones fly or flames burn like magicians?"
She answered her own question: "Because the elements are dormant."
"They exist between heaven and earth, filling everything, but they don't respond to you, just like a room full of tools that won't act on their own to work for you."
"And a magician is someone who can awaken the elements."
"There is an ocean of elements between heaven and earth, and there is also such an ocean within our human body, which is the sublimation of essence, energy and spirit, and is called the spiritual sea. Spiritual power is contained in the spiritual sea." She slowly explained to everyone the essence of spiritual power.
The giant boy Thormont raised his hand: "Then where is the Sea of Spirits?"
"Not in any one place, or rather, your whole being is an ocean of spirituality."
Professor Mérené raised his hand, and a dazzling light rose into the sky, like a small sun condensing. Then the star exploded, turning into thousands of points of light that fell on the heads of each student.
"Close your eyes."
Lorne closed his eyes and felt the light spots falling on his skin, a cool and refreshing sensation, just like the feeling he had experienced during the aptitude test.
Even though his eyes were closed, for a moment, he seemed to regain his vision and be able to "see" the location of everyone around him. Viola was on his left, her face no longer clearly visible, only her general physical features were discernible. Her entire body was composed of blue light, while Tormon was behind her, his grayish-white light raging like a torrent, occasionally bursting out of his body and forming small vortexes.
Further away, dreamlike figures looked around in amazement. They had shed all physical forms and transformed into dreamlike figures of light, with tentacles or small torrents emanating from them, swaying in the air.
Viola also looked around curiously, her gaze landing on Lorne, and she exclaimed in surprise:
"Wow! Lorne, you're so beautiful!"
Upon hearing this, Tormont looked over and exclaimed in amazement, "Big brother, how can you be so handsome?"
"How come he's completely different from us?"
"Yes, it's so beautiful!"
Lorne looked down and saw that his body was covered in iridescent colors, with pale yellow, crimson, indigo, and azure flowing around him, like a gemstone, a masterpiece of nature, exceptionally beautiful.
His only flaw was that he wasn't as refined as the others; everyone present had a higher level of refinement.
Professor Mérené turned his face, paused for a moment, and then suddenly realized:
"It's actually a resonance of the four elements: earth, fire, wind, and water. You're the one who blew up the monument?"
Lorne smiled shyly, not expecting that he had already become famous.
"This is your spirit body, the origin of every intelligent life. Everything that makes it up is spirituality, also known as the sea of spirituality. What emanates from it is spiritual power."
"The essence of a magician's training is to temper the spirit body, to make the spirit body resonate with the elements, and to enhance mental power. With mental power, one can weave a series of mental circuits to communicate with the vast ocean of elements and form all kinds of magic."
Lorne listened, completely absorbed.
This was the first time he had systematically and thoroughly understood the fundamental principles of magician training. He had previously only known that it involved using mental power to manipulate elements, but now it seemed that the essence was to enhance one's own spirituality, with mental power merely serving as a means of communicating with the outside world.
This gave him some insight into the magical cultivation system. Magical cultivation emphasizes the inner self and pursues the sublimation of the spiritual body. It is deeper than the spirit and more essential than the soul. It is the bud of all life.
Professor Mérené issued a stern warning:
"The spirit body and the sea of spirit are the most fundamental forces. If they are damaged, the source of life will be severely damaged. At best, one will become listless and lose consciousness; at worst, the spirit body will disintegrate and one will become a walking corpse."
"Mortal life is like dust, and spirituality is constantly lost in time until death. But magicians forge their spirituality, constantly leaping through the levels of life. Even if the physical body perishes, the spirit remains immortal until it is transformed into a god."
"God!" many people exclaimed.
"Does God really exist? I thought it was just a myth made up by the church."
Professor Melanie flapped her silver-gold wings, rising several meters off the ground, radiating a soft light. Everyone could clearly see her figure; she was as graceful as a goddess, holy and inviolable.
Her face, bathed in light, shimmered with a misty glow, and her voice carried a hint of melancholy:
"As you can see, we magicians are seen as extraordinary and holy by ordinary people. Every move we make can affect all things and protect the peace of a city. Even our dwellings are suspended in the sky, soaring among the clouds. Isn't that what they consider sacred?"
"But for us magicians, true holiness refers to those beings who transcend the mortal world and whose life level has leaped to an inconceivable degree. However, the path of magic is long and boundless. After climbing one mountain, there is always an even higher peak ahead. With each leap in life, we will always see a higher level. Who can say that they have climbed to the top? Holiness is only relative. In short, as far as I know, no so-called 'god' has been born on the entire continent for thousands of years. What has been passed down are only those legendary gods."
Upon hearing this, many students shared their thoughts and had no regrets.
After all, their path to magic has only just begun, and concepts like holiness and transcendence of life levels are far beyond their reach.
Only Lorne couldn't help but fall into deep thought.
How similar are the sacred figures described by Professor Mérené to his understanding of "immortals"!
