Chapter 24, The 6th Cat and Mouse Game
Chapter 24, The 6th Cat and Mouse Game
The obstacle course wasn't prepared for nighttime competitions; the lights along the edges were merely for pedestrians to barely find their way. Several Rottweilers, their black bodies overlapping like surging black oil from the ground, had eyes that glowed in the darkness.
Wen Xu swallowed hard. In her first life, Lu Heng, to punish her for disobeying, had brought a Rottweiler home. He put the hungry Rottweiler and her in an iron cage, giving her only a bone to fight with, for his amusement. Wen Xu even remembered him holding a can of beer, watching and burping with laughter.
She knew how powerful their bite was; even after a fierce battle, she could only kill one Rottweiler. If so many attacked at once, she had no chance of winning.
"The general in 'The Brothers Karamazov'..."
In this novel, the character Ivan, in an attempt to persuade his brother Alyosha, cites another story: a powerful general who believed he had the power of life and death over his territory. One day, a little boy injured his dog with a stone. In front of the boy's mother, the general stripped the boy naked and unleashed all his dogs to chase and tear him to pieces.
"Big rat, big rat, don't eat my millet!" Could this man-eating rat be referring to Lu Heng?
"Execute him."
Wen Xu pondered those two words, and she uttered the same words as Alyosha: this person who thought he could control other people's lives should be shot. But where was her mother?
"Aheng, I know you're angry about what happened this afternoon, but my mother didn't have time to steal the watch, and they have no evidence. Think about it carefully, such a valuable item, and they actually kept it in a place without surveillance cameras—it's clearly an attempt to frame me. Their badmouthing of me is just to sow discord between us. No matter what they tell you, don't believe them."
Wen Xu didn't think he could expose Lu Heng with his silver tongue. Even if Lu Heng knew that Su Yuelan hadn't stolen anything, he still felt insulted.
From the moment Wen Xu won against him, he had already sentenced Wen Xu to death. She was just buying time. As she spoke, she looked around. There was a truck less than ten meters away from Lu Heng. Judging by the length of the cargo box, it could hold at least three three-meter-long iron cages.
Lu Heng stood in front of her, looking down at her.
"I want to believe you too, but as you said, they have no evidence that your mother stole the watch, and you have no evidence that your mother didn't steal the watch."
Lu Heng clapped his hands, and a man emerged from the back of the truck, leading a Rottweiler. Among adult Rottweilers, this one was considered quite robust. At that moment, it was sniffing the ground with its nose, which was sticking out like a triangular cone, and its body was unconsciously moving closer to Wen Xu. Wen Xu's back stiffened, and all the hairs on his body stood on end.
"Its name is Awei, and it's incredibly loyal. It will bite thieves who steal from its owner. If the owner doesn't stop it, it will kill the thief."
Wen Xu was momentarily stunned. She clearly remembered that the Rottweiler she had kept with had a burn mark on its back, and when Awei looked down, the same mark was visible.
She knew that what Lu Heng said made no sense. In her first life, she had angered Lu Heng by breaking one of his teacups, and he had locked her and Awei up. Now, saying that Awei could catch thieves was just like Sun Wukong's golden cudgel, which could be transformed however he wanted.
Lu Heng added, "Awei is still the king of dogs; whoever it bites, all the dogs in the cage will bite that same dog. But I don't want things to get too ugly. If you can convince your mother to kneel down and apologize to her, I'll forgive you."
The dogs, who had been restless in the cage moments before, instantly quieted down upon seeing Awei. It seemed Lu Heng was right when he said Awei was the leader of the pack. Wen Xu had grasped the essence of the situation.
If she could subdue Awei, the other dogs wouldn't be a problem either. Wenxu hid the knife against her right calf. She had once smashed Awei's head with a bone stick, and she wanted to create an opportunity for her to fight Awei one-on-one.
"I won't make my mom kneel down and apologize; she didn't do anything wrong. Since you've mentioned Awei's abilities, let's make a bet."
"bet?"
Lu Heng repeated himself. He thought that Wen Xu would kneel down and beg him when she saw so many brave and hungry Rottweilers, and that she would also make her mother kneel down and beg him. After all, he was used to kneeling. Everyone swore that they had principles, but when they saw his price or the danger, their knees went weak. Why should she be different?
"What are we betting on?"
"You said Awei bites thieves, and if the owner doesn't stop him, he'll keep biting them to death. Let him go and see if he attacks me. If he does attack me and I escape, I win. You have to let me go and give my mother back to me. If I die from being bitten, you win. You're not afraid to bet with me, are you?"
Lu Heng blushed. He was about to agree, but then his eyes darted around. "Xiao Xu, you're acting very strange today. I just wanted to teach you a lesson, but you misunderstood me. You don't really think you're qualified to gamble with me, do you? Your life is in my hands! If you insist on this, I'll just have to raise the stakes."
Just then, the truck door next to Lu Heng opened again, and two people pushed a dog cage about a meter square, inside which was a woman who was unconscious. It was Wen Xu's mother, Su Yuelan. Her forehead was injured and bleeding, staining her orchid-patterned cheongsam red.
"Mother!"
Wen Xu called out to her loudly, but she just squeezed her eyes shut, as if she were trapped in a nightmare from which she would never wake up.
The two men removed the iron plate from the large cage full of dogs, and lowered the small cage containing Su Yuelan down using a hook, stopping when the bottom of the small cage was two meters above the ground.
The dogs in the cage smelled blood and kept jumping up, but limited by their jumping ability, the highest they could jump was still half a meter away from the small cage. They could only wander around below the small cage.
"If you lose, I'll put down the cage and tear your mother to pieces. Are you ready for this cat-and-mouse game?"
Just as Lu Heng said, she had no other bargaining chips. Even if she knelt down and begged him now, he might not let her go. He just wanted to see her struggle for survival to confirm that he had the right to decide her life or death. Su Yi, who had been watching the reality show, probably felt the same way.
The giant rat in the clue must be you. If you don't die, you'll surely devour my flesh and blood. This time, before he kills her, she must kill him first. She wants him to know who the cat is in this game.
"Okay, I'll bet with you. But Awei is in great shape, and I've been drugged by you, so my head and stomach hurt a lot. Isn't that a bit unfair?"
"I can let you run for one minute. You can run wherever you want, but I will release Awei after one minute."
Lu Heng fired the starting pistol, and Wen Xu quickly ran towards Ruby. Neither Lu Heng nor the person standing behind him moved. This horse was originally intended for Wen Xu, as Lu Heng was still resentful about losing to Wen Xu in the steeplechaser.
She looked stupid and ugly from showing off, which made him lose face. He would completely conquer her in this game, so that she would never dare to escape again. After that, he would drag the beast between her legs out and slaughter it for meat.
